BMW M5 F10: better, faster, more comfortable. Car "BMW F10" (BMW F10): specifications, test drive, photos

At the end of November 2009, the long-awaited premiere of the new, already sixth, generation of the BMW 5-series, which received the F10 index, took place.

The design of the new "five" BMW 5 F10 (2015-2016) turned out to be amazing and should return the loyalty of brand fans who did not accept the latest work released under the leadership of Chris Bangle.

The car is built on a shortened platform of the new BMW 7-Series sedan, and the appearance of the flagship is clearly visible.

Options and prices BMW 5-Series (F10)

The new BMW 5-Series F10 sedan has grown a little in size. Compared to its predecessor in the E60 body, the length of the new “five” has increased to 4,899 mm (+58), the width is up to 1,860 (+14), and the height, on the contrary, has become 18 mm lower and is 1,464. is 2968 mm, which is about 80 mm more than the main competitors.

At first, seven power units were offered for the new BMW 5-series F10: four petrol and three turbodiesel. At the top of the range is the BMW 550i with a 4.4-liter V8 biturbo with 407 hp. and developing a maximum torque of 600 Nm.

The remaining three gasoline engines are in-line six-cylinder units: a 306-horsepower biturbo in the 535i version, as well as two atmospheric engines with a capacity of 258 hp. for BMW 528i and 204 hp - for BMW 523i.

Diesel versions: 530d and 525d are equipped with six-cylinder three- and two-liter engines with 245 and 204 hp. respectively. The only four-cylinder engine on the BMW 520d closes the line with a return of 184 “horses”.

The transmission for the new BMW 5 is ZF's latest eight-speed automatic, but a 6-speed manual remains available as well.

The interior of the car has largely become similar to the flagship sedan of the seventh series. The fourth generation of the iDrive system can be supplied in two versions: with a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 800x480 and with a large 10-inch 1280x480 resolution, which has a large set of functions.

The production of the new "five" F10 is established at the company's plant in Dingolfing - they also produce the BMW 7-Series F01 and BMW 5-Series GT. The price of the model on the Russian market at the time of sales varied from 1,765,000 to 3,240,000 rubles.

Restyled BMW 5-Series F10

In May 2013, the German automaker introduced an updated sedan, station wagon and hatchback of the fifth series, which received cosmetic changes to the exteriors and interiors, as well as a new engine and additional modifications.

The restyled BMW 5-Series sedan (2015-2016) can be distinguished from the pre-styling car by the presence of turn signal repeaters in the rear-view mirrors, a different front bumper with round foglights and a chrome-plated curved insert, a radiator grille with a reduced number of ribs and a retouched rear bumper.

In addition, the car has got new wheel design options, additional body color options, xenon optics in all trim levels (optional full LED access), and in addition to the M-package, Luxury Line and Modern Line packages are now available.

In the interior of the BMW 5-series F10, color schemes have been updated, cup holders have been increased, and the iDrive system has received a new firmware version 4.2. As for the engines, all of them are now optimized for compliance with the Euro-6 environmental standards, which come into force from September next year.

In addition, an initial 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel unit with 143 hp appeared in the lineup, which is installed on the BMW 518d version. This engine boasts an average combined cycle consumption of 4.5 liters per hundred.

Another innovation is that from now on, the diesel “five” 520d can be ordered with the proprietary xDrive all-wheel drive system - previously this version was offered exclusively with rear-wheel drive.

The cost of the updated BMW 5 F10 in Russia has expectedly increased - for a car in the basic version at the time of sales they asked for at least 2,540,000 rubles, and for the top versions of the 550i xDrive and the diesel M550d xDrive, they had to pay 4,290,000 and 4,490,000 rubles, respectively.

O on combines the paradoxical. The highest reliability and thoughtfulness of the design, the minimum number of failures, banal strength, and ... the ability to literally absorb money for its maintenance, exhausting with sophisticated breakdowns. However, first things first.

Rumors and truth about technical similarities between 5 Series and 7 Series

The so-called "F-series" at BMW began with the release of the seventh series model with the F01 body index in 2008. Literally a year later, the 5 Series Gran Turismo came out - the “five” with a hatchback body. And it turned out that the design of this car is very close to the seventh series, inheriting the architecture of the body, electronics and elements of the air conditioning system. At some point, there were rumors that this is a great option to buy "almost seven" at the price of the fifth series. But just a year later, BMW introduced the fifth series sedans in the back of the F10, on the same platform.

1 / 2

Everything turned out to be simple: just the fifth series technically became the “relative” of the seventh. It was definitely possible to talk about a serious breakthrough in the class. While the main competitor, Mercedes Benz, actually used a stretched platform with a lower class for the new mid-size sedan, BMW did exactly the opposite. And, of course, seriously won in comfort and handling.

As for the cost of production... The cost price has long been irrelevant to the real selling price of even basic versions. In general, from a technical point of view, the victory was won already at the design stage. And despite the earlier appearance, in terms of sales in its class, BMW took the lead by 2013. And in terms of quality, the machine was noticeably ahead of the competitor, surprising with a reduced number of failures during the warranty period, despite the extremely complex design with the massive use of mechatronic units.

Even under operating conditions in Russia, the new series of engines and automatic transmissions performed well. And other equipment turned out to be very well designed and executed. However, the miracle did not happen, closer to five years, the complexity of the design is already beginning to affect the cost of operating the machine, and the oldest copies are already “delighting” the owners with an appetite for oil and money. Resource problems begin to appear little by little, starting at the age of three, depending on the attitude of the owner and the style of operation. But even in cars with a turbocharged V8 under the hood, up to this age, almost everything is in order. How "almost", I will try to tell in detail.

Body and interior

BMWs don't rust at that age. Unlike the main competitors, the chances of corrosion even at the age limit are close to zero. And after accidents, rust manifests itself extremely rarely. In the front, there is nothing to rust in the classical sense: the entire front part is made with the extensive use of aluminum and plastic parts. The hood and fenders are made of aluminum, as well as the suspension cups - now they are cast, more durable and have good vibration-damping properties and extremely high rigidity. Almost all other non-load-bearing elements are made of plastic. The doors of the F10 are also mostly aluminum.

The steel body of the car is protected from corrosion by a layer of high-quality paint, and on the bottom and other vulnerable places the body is covered with plastic panels, as well as layers of mastic and sound insulation. The internal cavities are protected by a layer of special foam, and all multilayer elements are double sealed and filled with preservatives.

There are very few potential weaknesses. First of all, this is a drain in the rear doors: water stagnates at the lowest point and the sealant breaks down over time, which leads to the appearance of corrosion of the reinforcement beam and surrounding parts that is invisible from the outside at first. The defect was not eliminated by the revocable company, and when operating in humid regions, it is recommended to check this point, but it is better to lay a new layer of sealant up to the drain hole, removing the “hole” in which water remains.

The drains under the windshield are easily clogged, on cars with a sunroof, water sometimes accumulates in the thresholds, but all these problems at this age usually do not lead to damage to the paintwork. Corrosion occurs on cars after an accident or as a result of being in harsh conditions of wet underground parking for many hours in the presence of damage to the paintwork, but on most cars you simply will not find it.

The absence of problems with aluminum and steel parts of the body separately does not mean that there are no problems at all. In front, the contact area of aluminum parts, steel spars and engine shield requires close attention. The presence of cracks and swelling of the seams in this area indicates too rapid corrosion of aluminum parts in contact with steel. There can be many reasons, from a banal corrosive environment to elements of non-factory fasteners from “wrong” elements, for example, a banal copper-plated tube in a motor shield.

The spars here are steel, so the entire front part cannot fall off, as it used to, but the number of important load-bearing seams is large. And first of all, it is worth checking the lower seam of the junction of the mudguard and the side member, as well as the connections in the area near the windshield. Also pay attention to the attachment points of the stretch marks in the engine compartment, they are subject to gradual destruction in the first place. The probability of a problem is very small, but if it exists, then it is very difficult to eliminate it. This is a note, including the already established owners of the F10, who are going to ride it for a few more years.

If the car was involved in an accident, restoring the body to its original form is difficult. The manufacturer recommends using the technology of gluing and riveting elements instead of welding steels, since manganese-boron steels are widely used in the body structure, which cannot be welded with high quality under normal conditions.

Pay particular attention to the weld points on the front spars, upper and lower, windshield lower cross member, front body floors and rear roof reinforcements: these parts are made of high strength steel and damage and deformation are difficult to repair even with an unlimited restoration budget.

The body plastic is somewhat less durable: there are a lot of elements, and they break quite easily in cold weather. Cracks on the front and rear lights, as well as on the elements of the underbody and wheel arches, usually appear at this time of the year. In summer, in the heat, bumpers are able to survive a collision with a parking post and a serious bend without obvious visible damage, even the paint will not be scratched, but in winter a crack in the plastic and breakage of the fasteners is guaranteed.

When buying a car, it is worth inspecting it from below, not in order to look for corrosion, but to make sure that all the decorative elements of the body are in place, because they are very expensive. Consumables include caps for headlight washer nozzles, felt lockers and, for some reason, mounting sensors for parking sensors. More serious “systemic” problems have not yet been identified.

The interior of the car is extremely high quality, but be prepared for the fact that the best leathers in practice are among the most unstable to wear. Light nappa leather is especially distinguished.

No other pronounced problems have yet been identified, but on the machines of the first releases, locks, drives of everything, the work of dimming mirrors are gradually moping ... The dashboard begins to “talk”, for example, due to loosened mounting bolts.

At the moment, the main “problems” for owners are the “upgrade” of the previous generation CIC multimedia systems to the “brilliant” NBT and the related “glitches”, and the saturation of the car with “missing options”. For example, closing the trunk with a button from the passenger compartment and without holding the button, just with the key, turning off the "start-stop", turning on video from flash drives, separately turning on DRLs and dimensions, starting to show video in motion and much more.

By the way, some are dissatisfied with the regular “two-zone” climate control of the SE configuration, which in practice does not separate the zones enough, but few are already deciding on modernization, the list of works is too long, up to replacing the “stove” body. In general, most of the hassle in the cabin so far goes through the department of "vanity fair", the installation of salons from more expensive and powerful versions, options from "couturier", "individual tailoring" and so on. It is still far from really serious age-related problems, while the owners successfully create them for themselves with low-quality alterations.

Electrical and electronics

I am afraid to delve into the details of the features of this part of the machine. Electronics permeate absolutely everything, from suspension to multimedia systems, and so far it works very well. Rare failures and "multi-hundreds of thousands" injections of money when serious failures occur only show that nothing lasts forever, and soon the car will start to have serious expenses in this part.

So far, problems have been observed only with the resource of the generator, battery, as well as with engine compartment wiring and sensors on "hot" turbo engines. A lot of suspension and transmission troubles could be attributed to the problems of the machine's electronics, because all these systems are saturated with it to the eyeballs, but it would be better to talk about them in the appropriate sections. I will only note the limited resource of many purely electrical modules, for example, headlights or lock drives, steering column, trunk and other “necessary” things. However, all this does not break right away, and against the backdrop of the price of the car, the costs are not so great.

Brakes, suspension and steering

There is basically one complaint about the brakes: the resource of pads and discs is frankly small even on cars with two-liter engines. The reason is the active use of brakes by stabilization systems, and the power is rather big. The rest is just a standard.

The suspension is not particularly reliable. By 50 thousand kilometers, the front lower levers and part of the rear multi-link levers are almost certainly replaced, shock absorbers are often changed even earlier than this period. Pneumatics on the 5GT at the rear are quite reliable, and for the price, EDC shock absorbers and active DD stabilizers successfully outperform air struts. Moreover, with 18-20-inch wheels, the suspension resource is often limited to a couple of large pits.

In defense of the suspension, we can say that it provides such comfort that many owners do not even try to slow down in front of the pits, mistakenly believing that since the sedan does not lag behind large luxury SUVs in smoothness, the suspension is just as indestructible.

The steering is again all electronic, the rear axle is steered. The system usually works reliably, but any failures lead to serious costs - as a rule, repair prices start at fifty thousand rubles for drives, sensors and work to replace them. The weak points include the cardan shafts of the steering column, they give a noticeable backlash and knock in motion. Yes, the resource of rods and tips with wide tires and bad roads is often less than 50 thousand kilometers.

Transmission

The transmission mechanics are mostly reliable. Most often, silent blocks for mounting the rear gearbox on powerful versions fail. In the event of a warp, the cardan shaft quickly breaks. The problem is extremely typical, so if you have a “charged” F10, then you should check the condition of the node at each MOT.

On all-wheel drive vehicles, there is a “traditional” trouble with the motor and gearbox for connecting the front axle drive, and besides, it is often necessary to change the oil in the transfer case. Otherwise, by a hundred thousand kilometers, not the most pleasant sounds from its bearings are provided.

Motor gears have long been learned to change separately from the drive. On machines with powerful units, the resource of the CV joint in front and the universal joint can be less than 50 thousand kilometers. It is recommended to carefully check all the items when buying - their price is less than that of, but still bites.

The eight-speed ZF automatic transmissions of the 8HP45 and 8HP70 series are distinguished by their robust design, the former are designed for gasoline engines and up to 450 Nm of torque, while the latter can withstand all 700 Nm. The design feature is a very high adaptability, due to which the box provides fast and accurate shifts, while maintaining majestic smoothness. But this is if everything is working normally, which is not always the case.

At the automatic transmission of the first releases, the mechatronics unit was noted for a lot of problems, which could not withstand constant overheating and dirty oil for about 50–80 thousand kilometers. By a run of 90-120 thousand kilometers, shocks often appear for a different reason, and diagnostics show an increase in operating pressure and time for filling the couplings beyond the operating limits, even with good mechatronics. In this case, the box is waiting for repair with the replacement of friction clutches and all sealing elements, and often also with the replacement of the gas turbine engine blocking pad, it works very hard here.

There are frequent cases of failure of the mechanics of the box. So, extremely lightweight planetary gears often do not withstand driving even with small jerks. In general, repairs cannot be delayed here, and the oil should be changed at every second MOT or even after 20 thousand km. The bulk of automatic transmissions on cars after restyling can withstand up to 140-180 thousand kilometers without changing the oil, after which inevitable repairs follow. With a more frequent fluid change, the automatic transmission parameters are noticeably more stable and, by a run of about 100 thousand, they are usually far from critical boundaries. By the way, when changing the oil, the disposable pan, which is structurally combined with the filter, also changes. And damage to the pan and its streaks for this automatic transmission is a common thing, so you need to be especially careful to monitor oil puddles under the car.

Fortunately for buyers in the secondary market, the automatic transmission is perfectly diagnosed by electronics. If you drive the car for at least a few hours before warming up, then the electronics will show a list of the main adaptation parameters, the filling pressure of the clutches A-E and the time for the accelerated filling of the clutches A-E. Ideal adaptation values near zero are almost unattainable, even on new automatic transmissions they are within -10/5. For normal operation of the automatic transmission, it is considered sufficient to have a filling pressure within 150 millibars, and an accelerated filling time within 50 milliseconds.

Most of the shocks are associated with a departure from the norm precisely in the time of accelerated filling and are the result of contamination of the mechatronics, and the adaptation of the filling pressure is mainly responsible for the wear of frictions and seals.

More frequent oil changes and lowering the temperature in the automatic transmission cooling circuit to 85–90 degrees, judging by the monitoring data, significantly improve the situation even for age boxes with “floated” parameters, and the lower the temperature, the more stable they behave, if the temperature sensors are in good condition , of course, and certainly clean oil. However, a decrease in temperature to 50 degrees and below, on the contrary, leads to a deterioration in the adaptation and operation of the unit.

By the way, contrary to the propagated myth about the high cost of oil for this box, its price is not so high, from 850 rubles per liter of excellent “non-original” and from 1600 rubles for oil in BMW packaging. Given that it usually takes 7 liters for a complete oil change, the undertaking is inexpensive.

Motors

On cars under the age of three, almost all engines behave perfectly: oil appetite from birth is sometimes found, but still this is more the exception than the rule. After two or three years of operation, the oil appetite appears in most naturally aspirated engines and supercharged V8.

Oddly enough, turbocharged units behave a little better in this regard due to lower operating temperatures. The oil appetite is especially strong with a “standard” oil change interval of 20 thousand kilometers, which is frankly a lot for urban conditions. By reducing the intervals to 7-10 thousand kilometers, it is possible to postpone the onset of unpleasant symptoms for a noticeably longer mileage, even without replacing oils with more resistant ones (based on esters and PAO) than, and reducing the operating temperatures of the engines.

The main problems of all engines, except for low-powered diesel versions, are similar. First of all, this is the hard work of the cooling system. It is extremely sensitive to radiator contamination, and all its plastic and rubber parts wear out an order of magnitude faster than usual. After three years of operation, constant monitoring of the coolant level and the integrity of the radiators is necessary, they literally fall apart. And this also applies to the radiator of the air conditioner. An additional engine radiator in the right wheel arch is already tightly clogged by the first year of the car's service life, and by the fifth it usually already has only half a hundred.

Tight packaging and high temperatures in the engine compartment increase the number of wiring and sensor failures in the engine compartment of machines. Of course, the V8s of the N63 series are especially different, with their "successful" arrangement of turbines near the engine shield. They literally fall apart the elements of the cooling system in the collapse of the block, the elements of the ignition and power systems, turbines and catalysts. And the gaskets of the engine itself and the valve seals do not withstand such conditions.

But other motors eventually get the same set of problems in urban operation. Plastic elements of the lubrication system require regular replacement and careful monitoring between maintenance. Otherwise, you can "miss" the oil level, and if the electronic oil level sensor starts to fail, the motor will go to a landfill. By the way, the liners on all new BMW turbo engines lift up easily and naturally. Control of oil pressure and knocks when buying a car is a must.

Problems with regular injector changes on all direct injection gasoline engines, recall campaigns, water hammer and other things are not unusual for F10 owners. Revocable campaigns do not cause any particular negative, since the service is still premium. And even after the end of the warranty, even serious financial expenses are not a problem for the owners. E83. Diesel engines are also known from other models of the company, N47D20 and N57D30 in different versions have been put on different cars for many years.

All motors, except for the large V8 N63, can be considered quite reliable on this model. Of course, naturally aspirated "sixes" of later releases and N57 diesel engines are noticeably more reliable than other engines simply because of the debugged and simple design of the first and the features of diesel engines in this series.

Radiator cost

original price:

34 868 rubles

A lot has already been written about the difficulties with dampers and an unsuccessful timing on diesel engines of the N47D20 series, but engines of later releases have no frank problems. And the B47 series engines that replaced them in 2014 have become much quieter, equipped with a pressure sensor in the combustion chamber and a little more economical. And so far, no serious problems have been noticed, although their design has undoubtedly become more complex and lighter. Perhaps there is still more to come.

The N20 series turbocharged in-line petrol fours, the most popular for the F10, have not yet been seen in my reviews. This series of engines just replaced naturally aspirated six-cylinder engines. Four-cylinder, all-aluminum, with an advanced CV design with offset axes of rotation of the connecting rod and piston pin, with direct injection and an adjustable oil pump ... These engines provide power and torque higher than the naturally aspirated engines that are designed to replace. And, by the way, they boost perfectly, up to 300–350 hp. With.

Structurally, engines with varying degrees of forcing differ in injection equipment and a piston group with different degrees of compression, but even the weakest ones are successfully boosted to the factory performance of more powerful versions. The resource of the piston group and liners is not very large, about 150-250 thousand kilometers before intervention, a small resource of the timing and oil pump drive chain is also noted. Nevertheless, the motors do not cause any particular problems, as long as the runs are small. Plus, the fact that the design of the unit is well balanced plays a role, and the resource of a number of components, from the electric pump to the timing, ends at the same time. The average restoration price - about 300 thousand rubles - does not look like something prohibitive against the background of the residual price of the car, and there are many contract units on the market for an amount two to three times less than the restoration price.

BMW 5 Series F10

The popularity of motors in the table roughly reflects the reasonableness of the choice. Four-cylinder petrol and diesel units have reasonable rebuild costs and acceptable reliability to date. Of the more powerful (and expensive) engines, the diesel hit stands out in the face of the N57 engine, which has a large power range and very good indicators of both the resource as a whole and reliability.

For the "purists" there are cars with in-line "sixes", with classic traction, sound and character. But with a set of problems of overcomplicated atmospheric engines and, moreover, a very “old” year of manufacture and high mileage, which negatively affects the assessment of their reliability.

Summary

The Bavarians wanted to beat the competition and did it. The price in this class does not really matter, slightly more expensive technical solutions pay off many times over. A new approach to building a chassis with massive use of electronics to ensure high handling and comfort characteristics worked. And the workmanship was sufficient to ensure a small number of failures for at least five years of production.

Of course, the price of restoration is incredibly high, as a result we got one of the most “disposable” cars of our time, but so far the current owners like everything. The main thing is to have the means to possess such perfection.

Perhaps it could be emphasized that the fuel consumption of two-liter diesel engines and gasoline engines is simply ridiculous. The average for diesels is less than five liters on average, and less than six in the city, while a gasoline turbo engine with a real consumption of 7.5 liters on average in the urban cycle is also a kind of miracle.

But against the backdrop of the cost of operation, this is not so important, and such cars rarely work in a taxi. Even without taking into account breakdowns, maintenance and insurance can take away 400 thousand rubles a year. With the price of each MOT from 25 to 60 thousand rubles, it is somehow silly to consider the cost of fuel. However, the amount of tax is also not so important, especially since the main demand still falls on cars with engines up to 250 hp. With.

If we are talking about recommendations, then the best possible choice are cars with restyled N57 diesel engines, with the main problems of new automatic transmissions already eliminated. But by and large, no matter what engine you take this car with, it will still remain a new generation BMW, not cheap to maintain, but in a good configuration giving a completely unrealistic drive. And try to find a car as fresh as possible, with such a complex design, this is even more important than mileage and a set of units. Remember the imminent, inevitable and almost irrevocable, in the case of the BMW F10, the death of units. memento mori.

Many people say that the BMW 5 Series F10/F11 has exceeded the conventional critical point of design complexity. Obviously, the Munich automaker wanted to create a car that would be the best in class. And in many ways he succeeded. But having carefully studied the history of the owners, it is worth recognizing that this BMW is controversial.

With the light hand of a Pole

The styling of the F10 was developed by Jacek Fröhlich, a Pole who has worked for many years in the BMW design team. The successor to the BMW E60 was supposed to be sportier and more elegant. It succeeded, and sales from the first days were good.

BMW 5 Series F10 has an absolutely unimaginable number of configurations. It is represented by three body types. It was equipped with 4, 6, 8-cylinder petrol and 4, 6-cylinder diesel engines (with one, two and even three turbochargers). The power units were paired with a 6-speed manual and 8-speed automatic transmission. The car is rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Equipment labyrinths

Often, many owners of the BMW F10 are unaware of the existence of some features. For example, the menu can program the time during which external lights should be on - the follow-me-home function (follow me home) - to illuminate the area at night after the engine is turned off. Some cars even have a thermal imager.

In addition to a very long list of options, it was possible to purchase body packages: Shadowline, Modern Line or M-package. Get the most out of your driving experience with EDC Active Suspension, Active Anti-roll Bars and Active Steering.

Demanded equipment in the aftermarket is Professional navigation with a 10.2-inch screen and comfortable seats, while EDC suspension with damping control and active steering are not particularly appreciated. Active cruise control and Head-Up projection are common.

This doubtful moment

Most of all contradictions are generated by reliability and operation. While the quality of the plastics and the precision of the fittings are uncompromising, the Nappa leather upholstery is disappointing. It is not as durable as you would expect from a premium brand.

There are a lot of systems in the BMW F10 that need to be constantly taken care of. The ZF 8HP automatic transmission requires an oil change every 60,000 km. And all-wheel drive versions of xDrive need even more frequent fluid updates - on average, once every 40-50 thousand km.

Some diesel engines (particularly 6-cylinder all-wheel drive versions) are equipped with a selective catalytic converter that requires topping up with a special AdBlue fluid. It is inexpensive (about $ 1 per liter), and the computer will inform you about the need to replenish it.

But the most important question: what about reliability? In response, the owners have a lot to say. Mechanics reassure: while the car is under warranty, everything is not so bad. Some copies in the secondary market still have a guarantee on important components and assemblies. The full warranty package is offered, as a rule, only by cars of the Premium Selection program.

There are failures in the operation of systems, the existence of which drivers sometimes do not even suspect. For example, a pedestrian protection system that raises the hood in a collision (its sensor is subject to service). Sometimes there are complaints about the withdrawal to the right of cars equipped with active steering. The problem is solved by updating the software. The noisy and expensive run-flat tires have been widely criticized.

Manual transmission failures occur: it is not possible to shift gear or engage reverse. Repairs are quite expensive.

Engines

The two-liter N20 gasoline unit suffers from one serious problem. After 70-120 thousand km, the chain drive of the oil pump fails - a howl occurs. Timely contacting the service will help save the engine. About 35,000 rubles will be asked for replacing the drive in a regular service. If the symptoms are ignored, the consequences will be sad - engine overhaul. Depending on the degree of damage, you will have to pay from 150 to 300 thousand rubles for the restoration of the unit. In 2014, the problem node was finalized, and the disease began to manifest itself much less frequently.

Ailments are demonstrated by a catalytic converter (20,000 rubles with work) and injectors (from 5,000 rubles). There are enough nozzles for 60-100 thousand km. If one surrenders, then soon the rest will capitulate.

A little later, you have to change the thermostat (3-4 thousand rubles), and then the fuel pump (from 9,000 rubles). After 100,000 km, it is the turn of the valve cover gasket and the cover itself, where the crankcase ventilation valve is built. The cost of a new cover is 26,000 rubles. A little later, the radiator may leak (from 18,000 rubles).

The injection pump 528th may require attention after 150,000 km. You will have to pay at least 25,000 rubles for a new pump.

The least problematic engine in the BMW 5 F10 is the 3-litre N55 petrol. However, there is no question of stability at the M54 level. By the way, it is also equipped with not the most durable fuel injectors.

The N63 series V8 engines experience high thermal loads as the two turbines are installed directly in the block camber. The heat from the superchargers leads to the rapid aging of the valve stem seals, which in turn contributes to an increase in oil consumption and coking of the rings. Motorists as a preventive measure recommend changing the caps after 20-30 thousand km, which will require about 30,000 rubles. The constructive miscalculation is most clearly manifested in the charged "emks" from the S63.

Diesel engines of the N47 series still had a serious defect - premature wear of the timing chain. In most cases, the defect was discovered during the warranty period. When purchasing a car with such a diesel unit, the warranty for which has already ended, you need to be careful. Do not underestimate the noise and clicks at idle.

Replacing the chain requires removing the engine or at least disconnecting it from the gearbox. Troubleshooting costs will be about $1,000. Vulnerability usually arises from obscenely long oil change intervals. Often, owners go to maintenance only when the on-board computer calls. And the mileage by this time in one oil sometimes reaches 20-30 thousand km. This is guaranteed to kill the engine by 70-120 thousand km! To avoid problems or delay them, the replacement interval should be reduced to 8-10 thousand km. It is worth noting that in 2013 the problem was almost completely eliminated.

In addition, there are malfunctions in the exhaust gas recirculation system and fuel system malfunctions. In the latter case, the high-pressure fuel pump is most often to blame (from 73,000 rubles). It wears out, starts to drive chips and disables fuel injectors (from 26,000 rubles apiece). Symptoms: Difficulty starting, rough engine operation and "check" on the panel. With high mileage, there may be problems with the exhaust manifold (cracking) or with the turbine (backlash or broken rotor).

Another drawback is the wear of the crankshaft damper pulley. The rubber damper exfoliates and disintegrates. A characteristic symptom is a knock in the engine compartment. The pulley will have to be replaced - from 11,000 rubles. After 100,000 km, the intake manifold and the EGR valve become dirty (from 12,000 rubles). The USR cooler may also leak (from 30,000 rubles).

Since 2014, a new B47 series engine has been installed in the BMW 5 Series, which has not yet shown so many ailments.

The 6-cylinder N57 diesel is more durable and problems with it are extremely rare. However, after 200-250 thousand km, additional investments are likely to be required. If the oil is changed on the recommendation of the on-board computer, then troubles with the timing chain drive cannot be avoided here either.

The N57 with twin supercharging was installed in the 535d, and with the triple one in the M550d.

All diesel units are equipped with a particulate filter. He can be troublesome too. The DPF filter becomes clogged during frequent trips over short distances (for example, when driving in the city). Burning usually helps. In addition, the back pressure sensor may need to be replaced.

It is worth noting that the maintenance and repair of a gasoline V8 biturbo or a diesel R6 triturbo is a rather difficult task, which is reflected in the owner's wallet.

Transmission

The most common complaints about the machine are jerks. They are often fixed with a software update. But after 100,000, someone had to repair the box (from 100,000 rubles). Summed up the clutches, torque converter and valve body.

The elastic coupling of the rear driveshaft (3,500 rubles) wears out closer to 100,000 km. Sometimes a destruction of the flange of the rear cardan is found (from 20,000 rubles). In the future, the rear gearbox seals may leak, and after 150,000 km it is necessary to update the silent block for mounting the rear axle gearbox (5-10 thousand rubles, along with work).

In all-wheel drive versions of XDrive, after 80-120 thousand km, the outer CV joint of the front drive often starts to crackle. It changes only in the collection (from 26,000 rubles for an analogue). Jerks during intense acceleration will tell you that the repair of the handout is approaching. A new handout will cost 250,000 rubles, and a restored one - 35,000 rubles. About 100,000 rubles will be asked for the bulkhead.

Chassis

The suspension does not create any special problems. It is well adapted to Russian roads. However, the first major repair may be needed after 100,000 km. Repairs are quite expensive, which is the norm in the premium class.

You have to change the front levers (from 4,000 rubles per lever), front wheel bearings (from 6,000 rubles) and front shock absorbers. Knocking in the steering can be caused by wear on the cardan at the bottom of the steering shaft (14,000 rubles). Sometimes knocks and clicks are emitted by the steering rack.

Other problems and malfunctions

After a while, the aluminum inserts located on the inner sill trim come off. And cracks may appear in the lower part of the head optics. A new original headlight unit costs 26,000 rubles, and an analogue from Asia costs 11,000 rubles. Bi-xenon optics are much more expensive - 53,000 rubles.

Every now and then the heated driver's seat fails. The heating mat is sewn to the upholstery and can be changed as an assembly - 60,000 rubles. But sometimes a broken wiring can be restored - about 5,000 rubles.

The coating on the air conditioner fan speed control button is quickly erased. The manufacturer has provided new buttons, available only as a kit for 6,000 rubles. In a well-known Chinese store, you can purchase the desired button for 700 rubles.

Sometimes door locks go bad. For example, in winter, moisture gets into the cable of the front door lock mechanism and freezes. If the lock itself fails, then it will have to be replaced (from 9,000 rubles).

Conclusion

Although the model is still young, many typical faults are already known. Unfortunately, there are too many of them. In addition, the design of the car is so complex that sometimes even official service specialists cannot cope with its repair. But, when everything works properly, the BMW F10, in terms of the degree of emotions, bypasses all its rivals.

Typical malfunctions

  • - stretching the timing chain N47 (2-liter diesel);
  • - the howl of the oil pump in 2-liter gasoline turbo engines;
  • - damage to the air conditioner condenser;
  • - wear of the front semi-axes of all-wheel drive modifications;
  • - pull to the right.

Advantages

  • - perfectly adapted suspension;
  • - fantastic dynamics and driving performance;
  • - rich equipment;
  • - the model is still relevant, which means easy resale and a relatively small loss in price.

Flaws

  • - too high maintenance cost;
  • - too many faults, especially electronics and diesel engines;
  • - high risk of theft;
  • - a lot of cars after an accident.

Sales market: Russia.

The sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series was introduced in November 2009. From now on, the sedan received the designation F10. Changes in this generation have affected the suspension - the front is now double wishbones (a similar design is used on the BMW 7 Series), the rear suspension is multi-link. Externally, the car adheres to the accepted corporate line of BMW. It is built on the same platform as the BMW 7 Series F01, so compared to the previous generation it has become longer, wider and lower. For Russian buyers of the BMW 5 Series, a wide range of engines is offered with seven engine options, including four petrol and three diesel. Among other things, not only rear-wheel drive versions are offered, but also all-wheel drive modifications.

The respectability of the BMW 5 Series sedan is emphasized by the initially high level of equipment of the most inexpensive version of the 520i, where there are 17" alloy wheels, bi-xenon low and high beam headlights with washers, front and rear fog lights, electrically adjustable rear-view mirrors, LED direction indicators and heating , leather-wrapped steering wheel, multi-function steering wheel, separating armrests front and rear, heated front seats with electric height and back tilt adjustment, cruise control, climate control, rain and light sensors, an on-board computer and a satellite anti-theft system. Auto Start Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration.The interior lighting package includes two vanity mirror lights, two footwell lights, four open door lights, taillights for rear interior lighting, and luggage compartment and glove box lighting. valuable equipment that can be added to this wealth, it should be noted, first of all, sports seats or especially comfortable front seats equipped with an increased number of electric adjustments, as well as a fatigue prevention function and active ventilation; 10.2-inch multifunctional instrument display using Black Panel technology; comfort lighting, including illumination of the center console shelf, door pockets and trims, door handles, exterior lighting in the door handles and illumination of the entrance / exit area.

Gasoline engines offered for the BMW 5 Series include: N63 (4.4-litre twin-turbo 8-cylinder), N55 (3-litre inline-6 turbo) and two variants of N53 (2-litre, 245 or 184 hp). Diesel: two variants of the N57 (3 liters, power 313 or 258 hp) and a 2-liter N47 engine. The engines are accompanied by an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, which provides high shifting and driving comfort due to close gear ratios and minimal speed jumps. This allows you to combine high comfort, tangible dynamics and reduced fuel consumption. Gears can be switched manually with the selector lever. There is also a choice of a six-speed manual transmission and an eight-speed sports automatic with electronic selector and adaptive control system, which provides equally dynamic and economical driving. Switching can be done with the selector lever or with the paddles on the steering wheel.

The chassis of the BMW 5 Series, as already mentioned, has been seriously upgraded. Integral Active Steering for the rear-wheel drive sedan combines the steering ratio function with the rear wheel steering. For example, at speeds up to 60 km / h, the rear wheels turn in antiphase with the front ones. The car behaves as if it had a reduced wheelbase, while improving maneuverability and steering. At speeds over 60 km/h, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels. The wheelbase "increases", which ensures driving stability and comfort, especially when changing lanes quickly. The Adaptive Drive system combines Dynamic Drive active roll control and electronic damping control. And the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive adapts perfectly to the most difficult road conditions, providing maximum traction and instant redistribution of drive torque between the axles for optimal traction.

Effective protection of the passengers of the BMW 5 Series Sedan in the event of an accident is provided by airbags for the driver and front passenger, curtains in the front and rear seats, as well as side airbags in the backs of the front seats. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) monitors driving conditions using various sensors and, if necessary, optimizes stability and traction by intervening in the engine management and brakes. It should be noted and other functions included in the BMW ConnectedDrive complex: a preventive safety system, adaptive headlights, active cruise control, parking assistance systems and warnings of a possible collision.

The advantages of this generation of the model include luxurious design, a wide choice of engines, the optimal combination of overall performance, maneuverability and efficiency, as well as the most modern set of security systems and tools.
